Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is now accepting applications for our Reading-based Graduate Programme starting in September 2018. Our structured Graduate Programme will set you on the path to obtaining a QCF in Estimating and provide you with the necessary skills and experience to apply for membership of the relevant professional institution and become a fully qualified and proficient Estimator.

Key Elements of the Graduate Programme:

  • Accredited training with quarterly development reviews for the first two years with specific training courses followed by two additional years of career development.
  • Each graduate is assigned a mentor (chartered engineer), a departmental training Manager and an HR graduate development adviser to ensure they are supported in their personal and professional development to gain chartered status.
  • Exposure to a variety of projects to ensure well rounded development.
  • Early responsibility and hands-on involvement on projects alongside experienced engineers.
  • Rotations where available in Estimating, Cost & Planning and Proposals & Commercial.
  • Training in estimating systems and methods.
  • Exposure to a variety of projects to ensure well rounded development.
  • From the beginning there is hands-on involvement working on projects with the opportunity to develop skills by working alongside experienced engineers.
  • There are opportunities for site placements in the UK and overseas during a graduate's first few years with the company.

Estimating consists of two main groups, Contract Estimating and Proposals Estimating. Contract Estimates are produced on behalf of clients and are developed to define the total installed cost of the project including all materials and construction costs. Proposal Estimates are produced to support Wood's bidding activity and typically include for estimating the man-hours and prices for Wood's services to undertake the work. Estimating liaise with all engineering, technical and management disciplines across proposals and projects executed by Wood.

Skills / Qualifications

  • You will need a minimum 2:1 degree in a technical subject that demonstrates a range of thought and application. Typically this might include Engineering, Science, Maths, Business Studies, Quantity Surveying or Economics.
  • Candidates who apply for this position should be able to show experience of organisational skills, interpersonal skills, an eagerness for learning and self-motivation.
  • Enthusiasm about developing a career in the engineering and oil and gas industry.
  • Demonstrated initiative, tenacity and excellent communication skills with an ability to learn quickly and be adaptable and flexible to match business requirements.
